Really?

OK. I get it. There comes a time when everyone moves on; players leave; times change; nothing lasts forever. Believe me. My favorite player of all-time made a few well-known team changes, but luckily Maddux spent his most productive years with the Braves.

But now, after a relatively fruitless and mainly frustrating off-season, the Braves have managaed to let John Smoltz sign a 1-year deal with the Boston Red Sox? It's clear that he's in the twilight of his career, and he's on the mend—again. But forget not the start of last season, before Smoltz' troubles started. He was the most dominant pitcher in the National League. He toppled Santana. He destroyed everyone. I'd bet he'd have one good season left in his arm, and beyond that, he's probably the most valuable player to ever wear a Braves uniform. Ever.

So with a surplus of money left unspent on anyone who will significanly change the Braves' circumstances, I don't see a reason in not letting John Smoltz finish his career as in Atlanta. Apparently, the Braves only offered the long-time face of the franchise close to $3 million and were unwilling to match the $5 million+ that the Red Sox are giving him, not including incentives. Money issues? There are droves of fans who come to the Turner Field knowing Smoltz is on the mound, and his salary would have been justified. Beyond that however, as a lifetime Braves fan, it's just the thing to do. But it isn't happening—at least it's not the Yankees. The Red Sox are the Braves' cousins in a way, and you can research that history on your own, if you are unaware.

If our season tanks, I know which team and player for whom I'll be rooting. Thanks for everything, Smoltzy. I'm a little disappointed in your old team.

the freaking red sox.. this WEEK they've signed THREE pitchers and an outfielder. JEEEEZ! they go low risk high reward on all our asses and sign Rocco Baldelli, Takashi Saito, Brad Penny and of course John Smoltz. Not a lot of money, but that's three all-stars and an outfielder with loads of talent. This is how you go about competing for the division title. Its not flashy, but they're loading up that roster, ready for battle with Tampa and I guess the Yankees.
