Phils Add Ibanez, Braves Stand Pat

Looks the Phillies and their anemic lineup have added that big bat in the outfield to help drive in runs: Raul Ibanez. Wait a second, their lineup isnt anemic, its maybe the best lineup in baseball! How come the Phillies are adding a 30HR/100RBI guy to their outfield while the Braves are still "focusing all of their efforts on A.J. Burnett"? How come I can write a blog post, create a photo illustration, check my email, listen to a podcast and drink coffee while working on two monitors but Frank Wren can't talk with more than one player at the same time? I still have hope Wren will pull out a couple of surprises before the New Year... but I don't have as much hope as I did a month ago.

Upside for the Braves: Raul Ibanez is a left-handed hitter. So when you're facing Utley, Howard and Ibanez in a row.. that's three straight lefties. Pretty nice for us opposing teams.. you know, if we had a left-handed starter....

The Phillies signed Ibanez to a 3 year, $30M deal. He has spent thirteen season in the majors, playing for Seattle and Kansas City. His 2008 Stats with Seattle: .293, 23HR, 110RBI, 85R

I think the braves passed on ibanez for the lefty thing, and that they don't want to spend money on hitters. They rather pay pitchers and trade for hitters. If we can pick up Ankiel or Hart, we would get a comparable hitter who is a righty and get to spend money on Burnett and Lowe.

I think Wren is working on two things at once, he is just only talking about one of them. And that is what gets reported in the news. The meetings are over, it is time for some action, or we are going to be waiting until march.

yeah yeah well i hope he puts something together. with peavy not going to the cubs, wouldnt you think kevin towers would come calling again? knowing the type of package we could offer? although apparently now that we dealt lillibridge, we have no plans to trade escobar. which would hurt our chances of getting peavy, especially since they already dealt khalil greene. i hope we trade for hart or ankiel, sign burnett/lowe, and then pick up some role players to fill in the holes in the rotation, bullpen and outfield/bench. 1-2 year guys. that oughta work.

The Padre's really need to dump salary. Peavy is moving either way. I think the braves really got a good chance at him because of the no-trade clause. At some point, the Padres are going to have be like, "We fucked this up, we got to dump him." But, he will only go to a few markets. The Braves are one of the markets, and the braves are a team that can deal. Many teams don't have the prospects. I predict that in March, peavy will be back, and likely being dealt somewhere. I hope it is the braves, and I believe we are still the front runner.

Getting Burnett and lowe actually helps the braves case. I think Wren knows that. We could be looking at a completely knew staff next year. Ain't that exciting.
